New Life -- John 1

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.” John 1:4

John wants us to know that only in Jesus can we have resurrected, eternal, spiritual life. Eternal life is entering into the very life of God – His holiness, love, peace, joy, glory, justice, truth, power, light, authority, and victory.

First the Word; then the Light and then Life in that order. Jesus is God’s light-bearer and bright and morning star. He is the Light of the Day – the sun/Son. Just as it is impossible to stare into the light of the sun for any length of time, humanity cannot look into the full light and glory of Jesus until we are in our spiritual bodies. Jesus is indeed the Light of life and the restorer of glory. Jesus had the fullness of Truth and God’s glory within, but His glory was subdued by His flesh so we could look at Him and see God. As we submit to the process of sanctification and transformation glory by glory, we become more like Jesus and the original Adam before sin entered. Paul in Romans 13:12 says that believers in Jesus are to “put on the armor of light.” Walking in the Light is a weapon against the enemy of our souls. Paul also says in Romans 2:19 that followers of Christ are to be a “light to those who are in dark.” “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 2 Corinthians 4:17 Being light reflectors of Jesus brings eternal, spiritual life to us and others. Suffering and willing submission to the Word of God/Jesus gives us an eternal glory that outweighs everything we may suffer for the cause of the kingdom of light.

As Jesus is our bright and morning star, followers of Jesus are also to be morning stars who reflect His light. A star is a light reflector that constantly gives light in the darkness. The purpose of being a light-bearer is to shine the light of Christ to others. All humans will shine some type of light – either the light of the Son or the light of darkness. Satan and his demonic host shine a false light. The Bible says that Satan even “transforms himself into an angel of light.” 2 Corinthians 11:14 God sent the True Light in Jesus so we would recognize the false light. “For it is God who commanded light to shine out of the darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” 2 Corinthians 4:6 Jesus doesn’t just have light, He is Light – the Light of the world. And, because He is Light, we have light in Him. Jesus said to His disciples in Matthew 4:14, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.” As Jesus is the Light of the world, He wants those who love and serve Him to be His light in the world. Jesus is now in the spiritual realm with God, so He must work through His followers to shine His Light and glory to others. Jesus doesn’t want us to be just hearers of His Word, but doers. At the end of the book of Revelation, we see God and the Lamb (Jesus) light the New Eternal Jerusalem – our eternal home. God and Jesus who are One will forever be the spiritual Light of all. As Jesus reflects God’s light and glory, those who love and serve Jesus are to also reflect His light and glory.

How do we reflect His Light? The Word must be illuminated by Jesus and the Holy Spirit and received to produce spiritual life. Jesus wants to dwell within our flesh body. To become light and life in the world, Jesus the Word of God had to enter a human and be birthed in the flesh. This is true today and forever. The Word of God must enter our flesh and be birthed in us through faith and obedience to the Word. If we are willing, Jesus will strip away our masks, so we are naked and honest before Him. He wants us to become children of the light, not remain in darkness. If we desire, Jesus will open our spiritual eyes so we can see beyond the “natural.”

There is light and life in the Word because Jesus is the Word – the full revelation of the Godhead. As the Word, Light and Life, Jesus will reveal His and the Father’s heart and mind to us. As Jesus is the Word of God brought to life in the flesh. He wants the Word, Light and Life brought to life in our flesh also. It will be the Word, Light and Life that will reshape and reform us into a new, spiritual child of God who reflects His Light and Life to others.

The apostle John wants us to know that only in Jesus can we have resurrected, spiritual, eternal life. God “gave Jesus authority over all the people that He might give eternal life. Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:2-4
